What's the Best Pizza Cutter?

Rolling Pizza Cutter

Yogi Berra once said, “You better cut the pizza in four pieces because I'm not hungry enough to eat six.” Maybe it’s not the best calorie-cutting mantra, but it does raise a good question: What’s the best way to cut a pizza? Well, here at the Pizzacraft headquarters we’ve been working on that question for quite some time, and we’ve got the answer for you.

Rolling Pizza Cutter

Probably one of the most popular pizza cutters, the rolling cutter, is an easy and practical way to cut your pizza. These cutters have a handle attached to a circular blade for you to roll across the pizza surface. Rolling cutters come in all shapes and sizes, but there are a few things to look for when shopping for one. First and most importantly, make sure any cutter you’re considering has a comfortable handle. Comfortable handles give you a firm grip to cut properly on the first pass. Second, make sure the wheel on your rolling cutter is at least somewhat sharp. Although it’s much more simple than using a knife, rolling cutters work best with an angled sharp edge.

Rocking Pizza Cutter

Rocking pizza cutters are also an excellent way to cut your pizza, but operate quite differently from their rolling counterparts. These cutters have a half-moon shaped blade on the bottom while you grip the top. Just like the rolling cutter, the rocking cutter has a name that tells you how to use it! Simply start from one side, press down firmly, and quickly rock to the other side of the pizza. These cutters take a little more practice, but can be a fast, fun, and effective way to cut pizzas. Due to their simple design they’re also easier to clean than other cutters. Rocking cutters are constructed from fewer parts (and none that move) which means they’re less likely to break.

Pizza Shears

When I mention the word ‘shears,’ you might envision a landscaper trimming a hedge in front of your house, but here we’re actually talking about pizza-cutting scissors. It may sound a bit odd, but this tool has been pretty popular since its introduction. You lift the edge of your pizza, snip to the center of the pie, and repeat on the adjacent side to remove a perfect triangular slice. Some shears even come with a supporting spatula to easily scoop and serve freshly cut slices.

What's the Best Pizza Cutter For Me?

Just like picking out a pizza stone or steel, choosing the right pizza cutter depends on what you’re looking for. The most convenient and easy to use cutter is by far the rolling pizza cutter. It doesn’t take much practice or effort to use one. Rolling cutters also tend to be a little lower in price than their counterparts. If you’re looking for durability and something that’s easy to clean, consider purchasing a rocking pizza cutter. With a little practice, you’ll be cutting pizza like a pizza pro in no time at all. Last, if you’re looking for a something out of the ordinary, the pizza shears are the cutters for you. These cutters are fun to use and produce a clean cut as well as a unique way to serve up slices.

Regardless of how you decide to cut your pizza, it won’t affect flavor – so all the more reason to experiment! If you haven’t already, try each of these methods and see which one works best for you.
